ABOUT YOGA

The practice of yoga originated in Ancient India as a technique to quieten the mind – something that, for a lot of us, couldn’t be more relevant or useful today. Yoga poses and different breathing techniques are the methods most often taught to modern day yoga practitioners to move towards this state of calm. Along the way, yoga has also been found to be profoundly beneficial to both physical and mental health.

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA

Yoga has been shown to help with:
– flexibility
– core and overall strength
– balance
– posture
– range of motion
– cardiovascular fitness (dynamic styles of yoga)
– pain relief
– stress relief
– improving mood
– enhancing relaxation
– mental focus
– sleep problems
– cognitive skills (such as learning and memory)

HOW IS YOGA DIFFERENT TO PILATES?

Both yoga and Pilates are breath-centred practices which link mind and body. The way in which they differ is that yoga also has a philosophical tradition and spiritual dimension.

“Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”
